O grande e o pequeno

Todo o caso de amor tem sempre um grande e um pequeno. Essa não é uma ideia original, apenas uma adaptação da frase: “a chaque deux amoureux il y a toujours celui que aime et celui que se laisse aimer”. O pequeno ama, o grande se deixa amar, o grande fala, o pequeno escuta, o grande discorda, o pequeno concorda, o pequeno se preocupa, o grande divaga, o grande se atrasa, o pequeno se antecipa, o pequeno teme, o grande ameaça, o grande pede, ou nem precisa pedir, e o pequeno já está fazendo.

Às vezes o grande é um homem, às vezes é uma mulher. O grande pode ser o mais bonito e pode não ser. O pequeno pode ser o mais sensível, mas nem sempre é assim. Muitas vezes o grande é o mais esperto mas o pequeno também pode ser espertíssimo. Depende do caso. Ninguém descobriu até hoje nenhuma regra que permita determinar quem é o grande e quem é o pequeno de um casal. É necessária uma observação um pouco mais atenta. Numa festa, por exemplo, não é difícil identificar qual é qual. Geralmente o pequeno está torcendo para que a festa seja boa, principalmente se foi ele que sugeriu o programa. O grande se comportará de maneira mais blasé até se deixar embriagar pela música, pela bebida ou pelo ambiente, quando então ficará muito, mas muito mais entusiasmado do que o pequeno. O grande não se preocupa em conhecer pessoas, as pessoas é que sempre se aproximam dele, pelo menos na concepção do pequeno, mas mesmo que o pequeno atraia qualquer atenção, o fato vai passar desapercebido pelo grande. O pequeno evita o silêncio porque tem certeza de que a culpa é dele. Por isso tem sempre guardados na cabeça assuntos vários que possam ser úteis em diversas ocasiões. Mas se preocupa sempre em encaixá-los no momento mais apropriado, com cuidado, claro, para não perder a espontaneidade.

A calça nova do pequeno dificilmente lhe cai tão bem quanto a do grande, assim como o cabelo do grande sempre está melhor do que o pequeno, ainda que o resto do mundo pense exatamente o contrário. Mesmo que o pequeno dance bem, o grande sempre dançará melhor. O grande não é bom de decorar letras de músicas mas o pequeno sabe muitas decoradas, principalmente as mais românticas. O pequeno geralmente se comove com a lua calado enquanto o grande aponta, olha só que lua. No final da festa é sempre o pequeno que quer ir embora, a não ser que a festa seja ruim, neste caso o grande quis e eles já foram há muito tempo. Na saída, o pequeno sempre tem uma promessa nervosa e oculta para o resto da noite enquanto o grande se despede dos amigos displicentemente. Em casa, o pequeno faz tudo pra agradar, é macho, é gueixa, é incansável, e, se tocar o coração do grande, ainda deve comemorar com mais uma dose antes de cair no sono. No dia seguinte o pequeno estará inevitavelmente preocupado: será que eu fiz tudo certo? Será que eu devia ter dito aquilo? Por que será que toda vez sou eu que beijo primeiro? E provavelmente vai procurar o grande urgentemente apesar de ter se prometido que jamais faria isso.

Não precisa nem ser um caso de amor. Mesmo entre dois irmãos, dois amigos, dois o que seja, sempre haverá um que quer mais e outro que quer menos, o generoso e o pedinte, o fascinante e o fascinado. O grande e o pequeno podem ser de qualquer espécie, inclusive bichos, com exceção dos gatos que são todos grandes.

What controls our emotions? The same two people might see the same tragic newspaper headline, (1) __________ one is much more emotionally affected than the other. Why is that?
